Adam, In a different thread, you wrote the following: "...To begin with, .308 was never a military caliber. 7.62mm NATO is a military caliber, but the two are very different animals and should not be confused or interchanged..." I seem to remember an article posted on Cruffler.com about this subject. Either it was the basis of the article or it was explained at great length in another one. I tried looking for it in the archives, but I couldn't find it. Is/was there such an article or are Elvis and Jim Morrison channeling me bad information? Gary

this confuses me and jim and elvis too... i've read that 7.62X51 is rated(proofed?) at 48,000 psi(cup?) while .308 winchester is rated(proofed?) at 51,000psi(cup?)! can anyone here bring us closer to reality? i've never heard of a problem from anyone shooting .308 out of a 7.62 firearm... indeeed, i've done it myself, an HK91 which apparently didn't know the difference! oh, and those 2 spanish FR8's, which i shot in high power matches against m1a's and ar's (i finished 2nd, everybody else tied for first!) did i do wrong? is this why i LOST the matches? am i being paranoid???? oh well, not many people on this board anyway, so what the hell.... ;-) |

Well, while I didn't find the article that I was looking for, I did find the info on a website. Check out the following URL and scroll down to near the bottom of the page. It has a section on the differences between the two. http://www.303british.com/ By the way, you can shoot .308 Winchester out of a 7.62 NATO rifle, but it's when you go the other way that's the problem...or so I've heard... The 7.62Nato round is Military and the 308 is a commercial round BASED on the NATO round-- For practical (shooting) purposes they are the same-- But they do have different Specs--AS indicated in the first post above-- This signature is witty -- YOU LIKE IT -- |

I have an Century Arms FAL clone and I have shot Remington .308 Core-Lokt from it on many occasions. The only problem I have ever had is a few FTF's because of the soft lead tip. I didn't know that there was a that much of difference in that you should not use 7.62 NATO in something chambered for .308 though, thanks for the heads up. |

The trouble here is if you have an old .308 savage 99,and fire say,hot 7.62 mg ammo in it. |

As noted in the 2nd post -- 308 Win is hotter (PSI Spec wise) than 7.62 NATO -- hence the Savage sit above isn't a prob-- This signature is witty -- YOU LIKE IT -- |

One thing to remember is when reloading Nato brass if you have boxer primed reloadable brass. It is thicker and has less case capasity and you got to be carefull when loading max or near max loads. Most info I have read says to back off a few grains when useing loads worked up in commercial .308 brass in Nato 7.62 brass. I don't load my .308 loads near max and have had no troubles. |
