I just saw the finest military Mauser rifle I have ever seen - an un issued Egyptian Mauser made in Yugo for Egypt in 1956, 8mm, unfired, with bayonet, and all accesories. Any opinions on this rifle are appreciated. ( It was under $300) Also, opinions on the 8mm round.
Thanks.

mark,

i never heard of yugo made egyptian mausers. but i bet i haven't heard of MOST mausers either! my experience is mainly with spanish and south american types, both m98 actions, and the earlier models, all the way back to m1891 argentine(same as the first turk mausers, i've heard...) mint yugo with accessories for 300 sounds like a hell of a deal to me, and there's nothing wrong with 8x57 cartridge, either. S&B makes an excellent 196 grain soft point load which is very accurate in my rifles, and does a number on deer, i've heard (from a couple of friends!)

SOG is supposed to have them for $199 and are advertising them as such. But I haven't called to see if they are in stock. I wouldn't mind having one myself.;)

These 98 Mausers are called M48 type Mausers. The action is slightly shorter than most 98 Actions. They can not be easily converted to 30/06 length cartridges. They are very nice actions very smooth. 8x57 Mauser is a very good round. It’s almost equal to a standard 308 Win. A hand loader can do a lot with the round.

The 8MM is te Daddy of the 30-06. I've "heard" one of the requirements of the new 8mm as was being adopted by the German Army was the ability to be able to drop a horse at 800 yards. Calvary was pesky. Nice solid round. I have a Yugo M48 and a Youg 24/47 about the same the M48 has a bent bolt handle the 24/47 has straight. The bdo means no markings-exported to several contries, including Egypt.

Dogngun & Greersguns: The Yugoslav M48 as made for Egypt is the so-called "secret" Mauser, with no markings other than serial numbers, to hide country of origin. These were made for export to the Middle East during the Cold War, & may have been sent to countries other than Egypt. (They are standard M48s, same as the ones with the Yugoslav seal & markings made for their own country.)

They were first imported into the USA in the mid-to-late 1980s, shortly after imports were again allowed to come into the USA. (Military surplus imports had been banned since passage of the 1968 Gun Control Act.) More have come on the market within the past couple of years. (CDNN Investments in Abilene TX (will sell to individuals) is a good source of supply for some types of Yugos, as is Lew Horton in MA (wholesale distributor, will not sell to C&Rs).

The M48s are well-made rifles, and many have come in that have been in unissued/excellent condition.

As to the 8mm Mauser, as developed in Germany & made elsewhere than the USA, it is equal to the 06 if not hitting a tad harder. The US factory 8mm loads are puny for a reason that has nothing to do with the cartridge design itself.

The 8 x 57 Mauser rifles, as first made in the late 1800s, had .318" groove diameters. After the M1898 action was developed (much stronger than earlier actions) & adopted by German Army, ballistic studies were undertaken.

The results of these studies led to changing from a heavy roundnose bullet to a pointed bullet and a .005" increase in the groove diameter to .323 inch. There were a lot of older rifles still around however, both military & sporters, which had been made with the old .318" bore.

With a lot of Mausers coming back to the US as WW1 trophies, when American ammo companies started making 8mm ammo they had to allow for the possibility that it might be shot in the old .318 bore rifles.

To avoid posible accidents (& liability) from squeezing a high power .323 load through a .318 bore, the standard US-made 8 x 57 cartridges use bullets with rather thick (soft) jackets, with reduced powder charges to lower the pressure. Unfortunately, this reduces muzzle velocity to approx 2400 fps.

If you don't think the Mauser is a tough round, try some European made military loads. You might want to slip on a recoil pad or wear some shoulder padding, especially if shooting from bench or prone, however. I can guarantee you'll notice the difference compared to US loads!
