very little has been written about this rifle, I had great difficulties finding some info about it...maybe that one day Cruffler.com could have an article about it? :-)
this rifle is now very popular in UK and getting scarce ( and expensive...), it is the best of the era 1870s, very well made and the true grandad of the mauser legendary 98 range,
still licence free in UK ( for now..) and classified as obsolete antique...I'm searching for documentation about this rifle as well as a disassembly manual, would love to see some old pictures of it in the hands of german colonial troops in East-Africa... it did not see major action in any of the world wars but it was used during the Boxer rebellion in China, in the 1870s fascinating small conflicts around the world, it was popular as hunting rifle up to the 1920s, exported all over the place including South America and Canada...anyone else share my interest for it?
cheers,

fred( UK)

Hi Fred!

I'm so glad to see that there are CRUFFLER.COM fans across the pond!

The 71/84 is indeed a fascinating rifle, and one that we should absolutely write about (thanks for the suggestion!)

It does, however, take second place for the best black powder Mauser - coming in slightly behind the Turkish Contract M1887. The M1887 retained all the 71/84's features, but reduced the caliber to 9.5mm, which Mauser postulated was the ultimate caliber for a blackpowder cartridge rifle.

Do you have an M71/84? If so, do you shoot it? If so, what kind of loads do you make up for it?

Looking forward to hearing more from you,

Adam
