I am looking for a manual used to instruct soldiers on how to use the Springfield 1903 sights, front and rear. I have a Springfield 1903 rifle, one of the earlier models with a magnesium receivers, sought after by early marksmen because of the smooth action. It is in especially nice condition, although with a replacement barel. I believe that it has been used in competition at some point, as it has special "O'Hare" front and rear sight covers, shown in my 1903 Brophy book, page 448. I understand that from the beginning, recruits were issued a special manual along with their rifle which explained the operation of the rifle... PARTICULARLY how to use the rear sight. This is NOT the ordinary tech manual often seen at gun shows, usually a reprint of the early manual. I have been told that such a manual uas used in early training, and that it explained in detail how each aspect of the reat sight operated. It even discussed the different front sights, and which one might cure some sighting problems, to enhance accuracy. Perhaps someone knows where such a manual might be procured? Thanks. Sam, I gather that since you have Brophy's book the info you seek is not there. There were various types of military manuals. FIELD Manuals, numbers beginning with "FM," used to be about the size of a paperback "pocket" book. This type of manual was the one generally available to the average GI. TECHNICAL manuals, prefixed by "TM," were the ones issued to maintenance organizations, dealing with inspection, repairs, storage, etc. If you can find an old Field Manual, published prior to the advent of the 03A3 with its rear peep sight, it might have what you need. |
