OK gang. Any idea were I could purchase cases and the .329 caliber bullets to reload for this rifle which is chambered for 8X56R? |

CD, I think this is a definite case of "roll your own." While the original ammo is out there, it is berdan primed, and takes a bit of doing to find. Either way, I think your best bet would be to try to reform the brass from 7.62x54mm and cast your own hard lead bullets. Adam C. Firestone Editor-in-Chief CRUFFLER.COM http://www.cruffler.com |

Dear Cruffer and the rest of the crew, After deciding to get in the cast bullet business I set about to measure the bore of this M-95 Austrian Mannlicher. I drove a pure lead slug into the rifle bore and pushed if down and out the barrel. Measuring the resultant slug indicated the following bore and grove diameters Grove .332" Bore .315" This is considerably different than what I expected as this Austrian Goverment Model 95 Mannlicher is supposed to have a bore of .329". Any comments? Would the much more common .323" bullet work in this rifle considering the above bore measurements. If I go the cast bullet route what diameter mould should I have made? Thanks in advance. All comments welcomed. CDJ

Go to buffaloarms.com for brass and .329 jacket bullets for the 8X56R. As for the excessive bore diameter, looks like cast is about the only way to get any decent accuracy. You may need to have a mold made also. I have a M95 Steyr in 8X57, but havent checked the bore. Hopefully, it's a little closer to specs. |

www.sportsmanguide.com has tons of this ammo available, by the box or case. I got 200 rounds for around 45.00 plus shipping. Nazi ammo dated 1938. Has the dirty bird stamped on casing. |

Question: Where to purchase .329 Diameter Bullets, Brass, (and dies)? Answer: MidwayUSA; July 2002 Catalogue; P.44; for a .318 Westley Richards (.330") 250Gr FMJ #707-059 $60.99 250Gr SN #697-340 $41.99 p. 63; Lee Lube and Sizer .329" Diameter (for cast lead bullets only; screws into your reloading press) #453-969 $8.14 p. 63; Lee 2-Die Set 8x56Rmm Austrian-Hungarian Mannlicher (8mm Hungarian M31) #230-095 $14.37 I'm not sure where to get the brass, but I would order the dies and the resizing kit, and try to size down a more popular size of cast bullets; maybe something like .338" Andy Out. |

If your bore's not too rough, I'd try paper patching standard 8mm cast bullets using the techniques developed by the NRA technical staff (the name Harrison comes to mind) many years back. If I remember right, they were using .300 bullets with a heeled base but no gas check and driving them at well over 2500 fps in .308 bores. I think it's in the "NRA Cast Bullet Guide" or "Cast Bullet Handbook" or whatever they called it. Standard 8mm bullets come out maybe .325 before sizing? Add the same .008 to that and you might be good to go. Or size them first to loosen things up a bit. Just a thought. |

In case you missed this post elsewhere: I've seen 8x56R at every gun show I've attended since I bought my M95 1895 Austrian Steyr carbine a year ago. Currently AIM Surplus has it, 10 rds per box, 5 rds each on 2 strippers clips, $2.25 per box. SOG, CAI/CIA, etc., may have it, too. http://www.aimsurplus.com http://www.centuryarms.com http://www.southernohiogun.com Neat rifle, tempted to buy another "just because." Herb Fredricksen |
